La festa del Redentore

Since 1577, Venetians celebrate the redemption (end of the plague) by processing to the church of Redentore in the Giudecca island. The whole week end is a celebration. It's the saturday right before the 3rd sunday of july. Starting in the afternoon, hundreds of boats parade through the grand canal to assemble in the bassin of San Marco. It's a celebration of eating, swimming, dancing on board. The night ends with a spectacular firework show that lights up the sky, the monuments, and the water.
